Not a perfect album. Not a consistent album. But its highs — “Listen to the Lion” and “Almost Independence Day” are higher than anything he ever made, and its lows — “Gypsy” and “Redwood Tree” — are still charming. And I haven’t even mentioned “Jackie Wilson Said” or the title track, which rank among his most immediate and enduring songs. One of my all time favorite albums, because of and in spite of its restlessness. Tape in excellent vintage condition.
